Getting into an accident in the middle of a drive is the usually the last thing on anyone’s list of activities. As the old saying goes, “Stuff happens”, and when it happens it’s a good idea to keep a level head about you in order to stay safe.
In general, there are a number of safety risks in case your car breaks down in the middle of a road, and these risks get bigger in case a road is bigger and busier, such as a highway.
Well in case you own a vehicle, know that the risk of a breakdown is always present regardless of your car’s condition. Hence, this is something that every driver has faced at least a few times in their lifetime.
However, for a new driver, a breakdown in the middle of the road can be a very overwhelming situation that is accompanied by a feeling of panic.
The standard procedure for a breakthrough on a highway is to coast towards the right, as far as your car. This is because you must get away from the road as quickly as possible in order to reduce the risk of getting hit. Atop that, it will be easier to get towed to a repair shop in case you are away from the traffic.
Once you are as far right as you could go, wait inside the car and give a towing assistance a call.
Now, it is not always necessary that you will have the time to coast to the far right of the road. In case this happens, the safest option is to stay inside the car and remain where you are. This is the safest option in case you are stuck in the middle of the road after a breakdown. However, to ensure that your hazard lights are left on. Also, in this condition, do not leave the vehicle at all! Give 911 a call if need may be. While 911 is mostly called on the roads in case of an accident or criminal activity, you may still be able to get the required assistance if that’s your only option. Essentially, 911 representatives may be able to get you in contact with a towing service nearby.
On the roads that are quieter with less traffic, you should essentially be able to get off and push your car towards the far right. You may as well get the assistance of people passing by if necessary. Once you are away from the path of the traffic, give your preferred towing company a call for assistance.
Nighttime breakdowns are, however, more complex. In this case, ensure that your hazard lights are on and exit from the passenger’s side in order to avoid getting hit.
Moreover, make use of reflectors or flares during the night in order to signal a hazard, while you wait for a towing truck to arrive on the spot. The prime job of the flares and reflectors would be to make yourself more visible in the dark.
